1. A Letter from our President

Dear Friends and Colleagues

For many people the upcoming year 2012 is seen as a year of threatening crises. No matter if we believe in the prophecies of the Maya calendar, we are witnesses and co-creators of the global money crisis, the ecological destruction and many political disturbances. Interesting are the different reactions to these threats. Some are of denial; some are captivated in more or less subtle fears; some are confident and trust the universal self.

I talked with my children (they are in their twenties) about the fact that at a minimum their generation has to work for the debts our generation has made. Their reaction was between anger and helplessness and they said: “Yes, we will live with a decreasing life-standard; this is painful for us, and it is difficult for us to accept.” There is a lot of helplessness and anger in our world but there is also hope.

The Dalai Lama, a couple of month ago: “At the beginning of WW I many Germans looked very forward to it and went singing happily into the war. WW II was seen as a bad necessity by many Germans. Before the war started inAfghanistan, inIraq– people in many of the world-cities went on the street demonstrating against these wars.”

The present crises are a crisis of consciousness. More and more people understand. Wars as a means of politics are increasingly regarded as madness There is a worldwide alertness against violence against children, male violence against women, violence between women, male violence against men – and awareness of the necessity that world-wide the human consciousness has to evolve to an understanding and to interconnectedness.

Ignorance is one of the roots of suffering, and there is a lot of it in these days – ignorance of the needs of others, ignorance of what is different and unknown.

It leads to separate us from the wholeness of the world. The ignorance of otherness comes back as the evil against me.

Public awareness for these connections is more and more present. This is supported by the internet and a powerful civil society reaching straight through divergent ideological systems and different cultural approaches.

My New Year greetings will encourage you to give up personal and public ignorance. Spiritual people have to know what is going on in the world. This helps to give up irrational beliefs (which are the shadow of the transpersonal) and come back to the clear truth of our hearts.

Where anxiety is, there is the ego; fears are borne by the ego. And where an ego is there is manipulation, greed, competition, power-struggle and jealousy. True spirituality is never led by anxiety.

The courage to relate to the truth of our heart is the most inspiring power. It creates a world of synergy and authenticity, engaging for all of us, hopefully for all living beings at the same time.

Yet at these times of crisis and change, with a smiling face I look forward - welcoming and recommending the upcoming EUROTAS conference inLatvia“Spirituality and Creativity”.

With my best wishes and the dedication to the gifts the New Year will bring forward

Ingo B. Jahrsetz

2. 14th EUROTAS Transpersonal Conference in Latvia, 20-23 September 2012

14th EUROPEAN TRANSPERSONAL CONFERENCE
IN LATVIA, SEPTEMBER 20-23, 2012

SPIRITUALITY AND CREATIVITY

Eurotas 2012The web section of EUROTAS 2012 conference is opened on our web www.transpersonal.lv   from the beginning of January, 2012 in Latvian, English and Russian languages. Our work is in progress, so the web will be improved all the time step by step. Pre- and post- conference workshops will be specified in March.

You will be able to register and pay for the conference from January 10, 2012. We advise you to use the bank account, opened for us by the EUROTAS board member and treasurer Dr. Dietrich Franke in Freiburg. The Latvian bank system is not quite stable just yet.

As always we plan to have lectures, workshops and discussions during the day, and there will be different creative cultural events in the evenings. As well, we are going to integrate creativity in all the process and to make this conference like a real piece of art itself!

Your early registration will help us a lot. If you need any assistance in registering or planning your pre- or post- conference stay in Latvia, please feel free to contact our coordinator Inese Berzina eurotas2012@transpersonal.lv and we will do our best to help you. Latvia is a transpersonal country and there are many places, where you can increase your spiritual energy before or after the conference as well!

Best wishes
Ingrida Indane

3. Reflections on Varna and EUROTAS Conferences

The Varna Conference brought together a very large number of people from all over the EUROTAS world. Those who attended will  remember it with affection and many will have been inspired by  the variety of  workshops and presentations  under its title of  “Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness and Their Role in Human Culture: Bridging the differences”

Our President Ingo Jahrsetz wrote that it;
“was a wonderfully organized event, full of inspiration, highly qualified presentations and workshops – scientific rigor and spiritual depth – all in the magical surroundings on the shores of the Black Sea. Thank you once more Marian Gospodinov, Elena Evtimova and your team for the organization of this event. Your open-heartedness, your knowledge, and good intuition made it a big success.”

Marian Gospodinov who with his team were responsible for Varna writes:

“This letter is not very long but is written from the heart. The conference was the most wonderful event for me and our team. Thank you all for giving us that opportunity to be part of this great event. May I wish you a merry Xmas and Happy New Year, dear friends!

I wish you to maintain the transpersonal view at every moment of 2012.  Yes, it is worth doing it, because it is the best way we can be really useful for all the others and for ourselves.

The year 2011 for us went under the sign of the XIII EUROTAS Transpersonal Conference, held in Varna, Bulgaria, 21-25 September. The whole organization process and the time of the conference itself were an exciting transpersonal experience for all of us, the staff team and volunteers. It was an event which marked our minds and our hearts. It was an honour for us to be the hosts of this forum  and we did our best to make it a feast of Transpersonal Skills and Wisdom. Ultimately, I think it turned out well, and people liked it. Of course, the quality of the lectures and workshops were the main contribution for creating a constantly good atmosphere. A friend of mine, who participated for the first time at an EUROTAS Conference, shared his thoughts:

Financially the conference was successful with about 3000 Euro profit. Different media reflected the conference all the time. We work out visual materials which are going to be at our disposal soon. The participants were around 200 people. The comments of the colleagues, who took part as participants, were very positive regarding the high professionalism of the lecturers as well as the whole organization of the conference.

I would like to thank all of you, who in one way or another had been part of it or helped it to happen.
I hope we all meet in Latvia in September on the XIV Conference of EUROTAS.
Wishing you all the best,
Marian

Unlike other events of my experience, where usually one ego collides with other ego, here the spirit was one of full acceptance, equanimity and communication beyond words, from heart to heart. One non-dual unity, perceived as if we were small shells of one big whole!

The EUROTAS Conferences have now taken place annually for many years and are the time of coming together of friends and colleagues interested and involved in transpersonal matters. The dedication of those responsible for each conference is recognized each time and appropriate comments are made. Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, UK, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Netherlands have all been the venues of EUROTAS annual meetings or conferences. Next it will be the turn of Latvia. So much loving concern and professional activity goes into mounting these conferences. They have become important building blocks in the development of the transpersonal concept in Europe and wider.  What can we contribute to their continued growth and to ensure that they flourish?  Apart from our thanks to those who organise them, perhaps our best gift is not only to support them personally but to ensure that we let the next conference organizers know that we will be there! It is always an anxious moment some months prior to a conference when arrangements have to be made often before joining fees have been sent. Please contact Ingrida and her team if you can as soon as you can just to let them know that you intend to be coming to Latvia 20-23 September. If some of us could do this as a New Year Resolution, it would be welcomed by those already preparing to welcome us.

4. The Latvian Transpersonal Association wins an EU mobility project

In November 2011 four Latvian Art Therapists, members of Latvia's Professional Association of Transpersonal Psychology returned home, happy and tired, after 3 weeks participation in a project supported by the EU Life learning program - Leonardo da Vinci Mobility. These four women are kind of ‘pioneers’ in Art Therapy in Latvia, because the profession of Art Therapist is quite new. The education in Riga Stradina University started only in 2006. The Transpersonal direction of Art Therapy in Latvia we started to develop only few years ago. That’s why the ideas from more experienced colleagues are very important in developing this new field. We were very happy that the EU Life learning program supported our project, because until this, it seemed to be very complicated to get any financing for a project of a transpersonal association.

Our partner organization - Hands Inc. in London provided us with an excellent program that was quite challenging, because we had to work hard every day, but it was inspiring and creative. Our program included seeing very different settings of Art Therapies – in education, in private practices and in psychiatric clinics. We were lucky enough to see our famous colleagues at work and whose books we had read during our studies. We were happy to do art work at Vicky Barber’s studio, exploring one of her well- known art play methods. Marian Liebmann – one of the most outstanding Art Therapists working in Bristol gave us an opportunity to see her at her work premises and shared with us some cases.

Our “Master Maria” (Galvez Patino) gave us the brilliant possibility to see her job working with children. She also organized meetings for us in different environments where Art Therapy helps people to recover or to improve their well- being. We visited the open studio “Studio Upstairs”, where almost everyone can come to create art. We talked to the client, who had been attending the studio for almost 10 years and he told us that he “used art-making instead of pills”. What an advertisement!

We were impressed by the variety of education possibilities for Art Therapists and to compare it with Latvia’s education, included much more art making and transpersonal orientated experience during studies. At the beautifully decorated (what a masterpiece!) Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education we were introduced to the Course Director Claire-Louise Leyland and had a chance to talk to students and to become acquainted with the MA in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy.

At Roehamton University we had a chance to attend the brilliant lecture of the well-known Jungian analyst Martin Shmidt on Transference and Counter Transference and to exchange views with students.
One of the most outstanding meetings was with the psychotherapist Chris Davis at the St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney – to get to know some of her professional secrets to survive in such a hard work – to help people to cope with death.
We were inspired by the enthusiasm and diplomatic wisdom of John Drew from EUROTAS. John told us about the history of the transpersonal movement in Europe and about his own experience in transpersonal psychology.

Finally, it was so lovely to meet Susan Michaelson – EUROTAS member, artist and transpersonal art therapist, who visited us in Latvia and gave two seminars a few years ago. Sue invited us to her house in Hastings. Her husband was cooking us wonderful Moroccan food, Sue told us about her works and journeys around the world, and for a moment we felt like really “the world has become as one!”

We are really glad, that many of these people whom we met in UK were interested to come to our EUROTAS 2012 conference in Latvia. Hope to see you all!

Best wishes
from Dace Visnola, Agija Bogdanova, Anda Lase and Ingrida Indane - Inese Berzina. (all members of Latvia’s Professional Association of Transpersonal Psychology)

6. The Integral Transpersonal Journal

After the success of the first issue (number zero, free download) number one of the ITJ, official journal of EUROTAS is now available at www.integraltranspersonal.com

The intention of the Integral Transpersonal Journal

The transpersonal vision is broad, deep, integral and integrating. In many ways the movement that since the 1960s has gradually established itself around this vision, thereby claiming possession of the new emerging paradigm, is revolutionary. While it is firmly rooted in science, it does not forget the wealth of knowledge borne out of the greatest spiritual traditions. Indeed, it seizes upon the most thought-provoking queries and earliest insights to have accompanied mankind throughout its evolutionary path and rises to the challenge of responding to large-scale, all-encompassing questions of meaning; all the while, it traces the outlines of a science of consciousness and ultimately succeeds in conceiving a coherent and 2spiritualized existence.

Letter from the new Director

As the new director of the Integral Transpersonal Journal I would like to introduce myself to the readers and contributors of the journal.
"My educational background is in clinical psychiatry and neuroimaging research. I can describe my professional development in few words: “From therapist to healer”. I started as a psychiatrist to move to transpersonal psychotherapy, changing my approach to the psychological dimension from biochemical imbalances to a spiritual level; from state of vigilance, as consciousness is defined in medical terms, to states of consciousness. I moved from research in psychiatric diseases using imaging techniques to qualitative research methods applied to psychotherapy."

Giovanna Calabrese

Happy New Year
To all of you my dear friends
May your light shine on

7. New ITP/EUROTAS Scholarship!

At the recent 2011 EUROTAS Conference in Bulgaria, the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) in Palo Alto, California, USA, became an institutional member of EUROTAS. The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology is a private, non-sectarian graduate school that was founded in 1975. The Institute began as a groundbreaking center of integrative, whole-person learning and training. Today, ITP is a leader in transpersonal research and education of clinicians, spiritual guides, wellness caregivers, and consultants who apply transpersonal principles and values in a variety of settings.

The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology is pleased to announce a new ITP/EUROTAS Scholarship for members of the European Transpersonal Association (EUROTAS), in celebration of the long and historic relationship and affinity of mission and values between the two organizations.

Details of The ITP/EUROTAS Scholarship are as follows:

  1. This scholarship is open only to EUROTAS members. Applicants will need to provide proof of EUROTAS membership (individual membership or Faculty, student or staff of a EUROTAS member institution qualifies). The scholarship does not apply to spouses or dependants of EUROTAS members.
  2. The scholarship is available only to non-residents of the USA.
  3. Applicants will need to satisfy all regular ITP admissions policies and procedures, as well as all lTP academic standards and policies.

8. Newsletter 65 or No 1? - from Monique Tiberghien

So this is Newsletter No 65 or is it No 1 ?

Monique Tiberghien writes:

Some words for the number 65 : 64 was the last number of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Its meaning is - "Before the accomplishment" - "before the passage"

Now we are in the number 65 so it is a new series and this newsletter is number 1. The meaning is: Creative spring (élan), powerful capacity to welcome new currents and help in their realisation.

2012 is also the Year of the Dragon for the Chinese Calendar - the only mythologic animal among the 12 animals of the year. Again it means creativity, the one coming from the basic strength of the complementary dragons (feminine and masculine.)

9. A new regional initiative in Germany

Regional Group Germany: The „Forum Transpersonal” in Freiburg/Breisgau

The “Forum Transpersonal” in Freiburg is a group of people who came out of the organization team of the EUROTAS Conference „Forgiving and Reconciliation” in Freiburg 2007. We have been in touch since then and tried to find a conceptual formulation which could enable us to implement transpersonal psychology and spirit into daily life and into a program of continuing events.

We meet quarterly and have a vivid exchange on issues that are of interest: the further development within EUROTAS, the transpersonal basic approach, themes like near-death experience, psychosis, politics, daily life experience within the perspective of the transpersonal approach and more.

We are now at an exciting point: at the opening ceremony of the “International Institute for Consciousness Exploration and Psychotherapy” (http://consciousness-exploration.org/) on 12th of November in Freiburg, we opened up our group for new members to find more support for further events and programs. We intend to organize quarterly meetings within the regional group with talks on transpersonal issues, watching films, discussing literature. We are planning to invite people who are path-breaking and interdisciplinary working in the field of psychotherapy and consciousness exploration to bring the transpersonal impulse into contact with daily life and at the same time to create an access to the transpersonal field for people and institutions.

We’d like to establish an ongoing program with lectures, readings and information on transpersonal therapy and theory. The Forum is representing an information provider and meeting place for transpersonal psychotherapy and people who are interested in alternative and extended forms of science and therapy.

We also like to forward and support the creation and the exchange with regional groups from different countries that are also members of EUROTAS.

Erich has established a section for Regional groups on the homepage of EUROTAS www.eurotas.org. We invite all existing groups to join there and to present their work and their ideas.

Please visit us online (german)

With best wishes for the New Year 2012!

11. The Science Delusion - new book by Rupert Sheldrake

A special event to launch

THE SCIENCE DELUSION: Freeing the Spirit of Inquiry
Tuesday, 17th January 2012 from 19:00 to 21:30
Great Hall King's College London, Strand, London WC2R 2LS.

The science delusion is the belief that science already understands everything, in principle. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. The impressive achievements of science seemed to support this confident attitude. But recent research has revealed unexpected problems at the heart of physics, cosmology, biology, medicine and psychology. In his new book, launched at this event, Dr Rupert Sheldrake, one of the world’s most innovative scientists, shows how the sciences are being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. Should science be a belief-system, or a realm of enquiry? Sheldrake shows that the scientific worldview is moribund. Increasingly expensive research is reaping diminishing returns. In the sceptical spirit of true scientific enquiry, Sheldrake turns the ten fundamental dogmas of science into questions, opening up startling new possibilities. The laws of nature may be habits that change and evolve. Minds may extend far beyond brains. The total amount of matter and energy may be increasing. Children may inherit characteristics acquired by their parents. Memories may not be stored as traces in our brains. Mental causation may work from the future towards the past, while energetic causation works from the past towards the future. The Science Delusion will radically change your view of what is possible.

Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and 10 books, including The Science Delusion (January 2012). He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge University, a Research Fellow of the Royal Society, and from 2005-2010 the Director of the Perrott-Warrick Project, funded from Trinity College, Cambridge. His web site is www.sheldrake.org.
Chair: Dr. Peter Fenwick

Drinks and snacks will be served after the presentation alongside a book signing session by the author. The book will be available at £20.

Tickets: £15 for members, £18 for non-members, £10 for students (ID required)

13. Last Words – Eva Titus

We have sad news:

Monique Tiberghien writes:

“Eva Titus died suddenly last Monday 26 and the service will take place Wednesday 4 January in Brussels, 57 avenue du Silence. We have worked together for 20 years and she was such a precious friend, so inspired and ready to act for the emergence of a new consciousness. Very devoted to the Tibetan cause, she was also practicing actively the Tibetan Buddhist meditation. She was a precious support for the evolution of the transpersonal field in Belgium and for EUROTAS since 1995.

It seems difficult circumstances but maybe it is what she wanted: to be in silence and tranquillity to leave this world. Eva was more at ease, less suffering and even joyful these last weeks but very retired, needing silence and to be alone. Yesterday with my colleague Jean Pavy, I went to the house where she is in a cold room; it is placed in "avenue du silence!" We prayed and meditated, it was a great moment, and she seems beautiful in a black Tibetan dress and sacred jewels with a peaceful expression on the face."

John Drew writes:

Dear Eva, As I was meditating on the verse below of Rabindranath Tagore which I had just found again, I heard that you had left us. I remember some of the special moments when we met and am glad to have known you. You will leave sadness behind you with your friends, but they will, like me, be remembering you and be glad for the times they knew you

As ever,
fondly
John

Rabindranath Tagore
The ocean of peace lies ahead of me
Sail the boat, O pilot
You are my constant companion now
Take me in you lap.
Along our journey to the infinite
The pole star alone will shine.
Giver of Freedom
Set me free.
May your forgiveness and compassion
Be my eternal resources for the journey-
May the mortal ties fall away.
May the vast universe
Hold me in the embrace
And with an undaunted heart may I come to know the Great Unknown

Ingo B. Jahrsetz writes:

Dear Eva,
In the last weeks very often I thought at you. I had been worried about your health and your seclusion. You were in my heart as my soul-mate.

And I didn’t realize that silence was your preparation for the big transition. Death always comes unexpectedly. Your death makes me very sad.
May you be united with the clear white light of divine oneness, may you be rescued from the entire burden you had to bear, may you be in deep peace and enveloped in universal love.

Ingo

Pia Keiding writes:

The sad news about Eva has been very present these last days. Eva was a remarkable being and I am very fortunate to have known her for so long. I first met her in the transpersonal movement in the mid-80es and in all the courses given by Tarab Tulku. After the years of creating the Tarab Institute in 1994 and studying together in Tarab Tulku’s UD training, we continued to meet both as friends and also within the EUROTAS meetings and conferences.

Pia
