1. Letter from the President

Dear friends inside and outside EUROTAS,

I am very happy to share some impressions of our recent Barcelona Congress and also some ideas about what will come next. As many of you already know, it was very successful in several ways and also just a happy event: we had family feelings and the joy of being together with a lovely group of people – around 270, actually. We were welcomed by a very warm group of organizers around Magda and Jaume, who did their best to make us feel at home and they kept a smile in their faces even with some obvious lack of sleep... We had a huge amount of high quality presentations, a nice party and drumming. I must confess that the drumming is one of the best memories for me because I am still not used to see everybody dancing with the sound of drums in a plenary room.

For me this brings some visions about where we are with our Transpersonal Movement. I think we are now more mature, we are very serious about it and we dance and play within it at the same time.

During our Delegates meeting, we welcomed three new countries in EUROTAS – Estonia, Italy and Ireland – and so we maintain our expansion as an Association and as a movement. Also we decided that we will welcome individual members supporting us and sharing our spirit.

Our next Conferences are already scheduled, the 2009 one for Italy, 15-19 October, and for the 2010 conference it will be Switzerland. In Italy, Pier Luigi Lattuada, and the OM Association will welcome us a very courageously offer. Things are already moving towards it with a strong pace. The title of our 12th EUROTAS International Conference will be “Beyond the Mind, Towards a Consciousness of Unity. From a culture of competition to a culture of sharing”.

In Switzerland, Fausto Sommer and his crew also made recently a first proposition for a title: "Knowledge, Pleasure and Belief" (we will get back on this later, of course, though it looks nice) The planned dates are 29 September to 3 October 2011.

I had the honor and the pleasure of delivering the last plenary lecture and, during the discussion that ensued, my idea that it is now time for us to go public, contact the media without fear and even make some moves towards the politicians was welcomed. So I hope we will have a sort of manifest from our Barcelona Congress – to be handed on to media people and politicians and, at the same time, I see that Pier Luigi is already working for us to have a more ambitious manifesto at the time of our 2009 Conference. I do believe that at the present moment of crisis in the world (and therefore, opportunity) we do have some suggestions about what should come next for Humankind. Lets start talking about this with a bold heart.

Our website is also different now, with the strong and competent support from Erich Meier. We will make sure that it gets more input and becomes an excellent meeting point for people inside and outside EUROTAS. I hope I will also add a new text about EUROTAS very soon.

And because Christmas is close, I want to wish everybody a time of happiness and light with a clear mind and a warm heart and for 2009, a New Year full of hope and a daring spirit – for we must have a say about the future!

Warm regards, Vitor Rodrigues, PhD
President of EUROTAS

2. The Barcelona EUROTAS Conference – Helen Bazzard

Nearly 300 participants from all over Europe and from the US, India and other countries around the world took part in a very special conference organized by Magda and Jaime and a dedicated team from Catalan Transpersonal Association.

The many workshops of high quality and interest were complemented by excellent presentations and a warm and welcoming atmosphere which enabled many friendships to be renewed and developed and also progress to be made on the future of EUROTAS. Much of the work of the Conference remains in the hearts and minds of those present, but there will be further publication of the proceedings in due course on the Eurotas.org website and other ways of distributing the work.

Helen Bazzard writes a personal view:

The Ritual of Attendance!

Well, there goes another esplendido EUROTAS conference!

The 4th I’ve attended and yet again, what an experience – each time, I come away with a sense of deep gratitude for having met you all!

Any disagreements merely serve as grit for the pearl.
My faith in the potential of your ideas, work and personal growth deepens and inspires.

The ritual of attendance is interesting, too.
For a while I always went to my local church service at Easter when the priest washes our feet in remembrance of Jesus work.
The first year my timid ego wondered if I could stand the exposure.
The second year I felt glad for the priest in having my rather pretty feet amongst some of the others.
On the third year I no longer thought about my feet because of feeling such closeness to the man kneeling there, at my feet, tenderly wiping off the water with a soft towel.

During my attendance at the EUROTAS conferences, I have run from plenary to workshop desperately trying to digest all the knowledge offered until my mind hummed with exertion. I have experienced really knowing through sensing into heart, mind and body.

This year, thanks to the preciosa, Catalan team, I felt greater connection. And what drumming! My hips moved using muscles I didn’t know I had!

So I honour the connection to your courage in exploring, your dexterity in thinking and your commitment to heart-felt responses.

Human potential is vast and, I believe, only fully maximised through connection to others and our world.

Beyond the Personal I find You.

Helen Bazzard. Transpersonal Psychotherapist working in Brighton, UK.
CTP and EUROTAS Member.

3. The 12th EUROTAS Conference in Italy 15-18 October 2009

“DARE UNITY”

“We all are trapped in our minds. Realizing this is the first step of the journey towards liberation  - Ram Dass”

Not two repeats the wave riding mother ocean,
Not two whispers brother wind to the flower fragrance,
Not two roars sips of wet summer sister cloud on the back of the sky
Father of lighted flashes,
Not two shines the beam in the ice,
Melt sun, murmur of white moving,
Not two mother, plentiful mother, guardian of fire
Spread flying by smiling steam,
Not two sprouted seed of lavished heart
Not to resounds the beat of the ten thousands beings.

“Not two”, is the expression that better defines “the way” in the age old Tao tradition.
In the Advaita Vedanta the word “Advaita” means “not dual”. Saint Thomas’s Gospel says: “If you do not make one of two, you will not enter the Kingdom.”. The fathers of psychology, from William James, Rollo May to Ken Wilber state that the primary illness of modern society is separation, the dualism between subject and object. Modern physics declares: matter is energy. The 11th international Meeting of EUROTAS, with its five days of speeches, workshops, study groups , and invited experts from thirty countries and from most continents, suggests to dare unity.
Dare to cross the boundaries of fear, the mother of all judgements; to go beyond the boundaries of judgement, the mother of all dualisms; to go across the barriers of dualism, the mother of every conflict, whether interior, relational, social, cultural, political or religious.
Dare to trust our true nature, mother of freedom; to find the courage of responsibility and of sympathy for our human condition. Dare a scientific theory and an experimental practice coming from a unitary theory of the interior transpersonal experience to open the way to ecology of the mind and a culture of sharing.
Dare the descent from the world of ideas of the transpersonal vision to that of everyday life, through practical suggestions in different fields, particularly regarding the scientific, educational, social, environmental spheres.

Best wishes and please let me have your thoughts and suggestions

Pier Luigi Lattuada

5. The Alubrat Congress in Portugal

The Portuguese International Congress of Alubrat, the Portuguese-Brazilian Transpersonal Association was held between 14-16 November, with the title “Myths and Archetypes: a Transpersonal View”

It was very successful, with close to 100 attendees, high quality talks and workshops and lots of hugs and sharing – like in the Barcelona EUROTAS Congress!.
Subjects ranged from fairy tales and florals to national archetypes and myths, the Divine feminine to super-heroes and fun came along with hard work. The working language was Portuguese but we did have some people from Brazil, Spain, and the UK. Also we asked for people interested in directly collaborating with Alubrat and we were surprised to get a very enthusiastic answer – with signed commitments from quite a number of people.

Our next Alubrat International Conference will be held in Brazil, two years from now, but meanwhile we hope to have a Symposium in Portugal next year.

6 BPS Transpersonal Section Annual Conference – Tony Turvey

Hello everyone

This year, for the first time, the keynote lectures at the BPS Transpersonal Section Annual Conference were recorded.

The edited lectures are:

Dr. Fraser Watts: The interface between psychology & spirituality
Professor Rosemarie Anderson (Institute of Transpersonal Psychology; Palo Alto,California) Keynote: Intuitive Inquiry: a Transpersonal Method. Workshop: Body-based modes of intuition.
Dr David Brazier: Zen therapy & Buddhist psychology
Rob Preece: The nature of mind: a Buddhist perspective in Transpersonal psychology
Prof David Fontana: Mystery and Enlightenment: Transpersonal insights from the Western psycho-spiritual traditions
Dr Malcolm Walley: Transcending the divide: Evolution, being and gender
Prof Les Lancaster: The divine feminine in Kabbalah and transpersonal psychology
The above are now available on the Section website pages off the BPS main website

Go to http://www.bps.org.uk/tps
And then link on the left hand side to Audio Archive

I found the audio downloads worked ok on my Windows pc. Also if you highlight the download icon on the screen and right click your mouse you get the standard options and this allows you to save the MPEG file to your pc. Often saving a download and playing off your own pc can be easier than live streaming from a website .And after you have downloaded once it is always available again.

Best wishes to all and thanks again to Kendall Wrightson for all the time and effort he has put into this project

Tony Turvey

7. A Message from Jure Biechonski in Estonia

hi friends.

Still recovering from the wonderful experience in Barcelona, and trying to work out on the scale from 0 to 10 how much transpersonal I am.
I made quiet a few new friends, met amazingly interesting people, and made some very good professional contacts, as we have an institute in Estonia for transpersonal hypnotherapy-psychology, and in a country of 1 million population we have 160 students!

I am always interested in teachers exchange and students exchange, and some of the amazing people I have met I am inviting to Estonia to teach our students.

I am looking very much forward to the conference in Italy, apart from trying to connect with some more people, especially with those that I have tried but for some reason it did not happen, so I will try again next conference, this is why I am coming, to meet new people, to have fun and by the way to learn new things.

I have already started to collect materials for my presentations in the next conference. One area is about "embracing the Shadow" and the other is a special development of my passionate subject, psychoneuroimmnology, this time i will focus on The mind body and soul in health.

Thank you all for being there.
thank you for what you are doing
thank you for who you are

with love
Jure Biechonski
President of the Estonian Transpersonal Association

9. An Article by Pier Luigi Lattuada: „Dare to open doors“

Eurotas friends may be interested to read this article by Pier Luigi who will be responsible for the EUROTAS conference next year in Italy which is discussed in it.

Beyond the Mind: dare open the doors

P.L.Lattuada M.D., Ph.D.

The logos originates and reaches our consciousness through a hardware made of 10¹º cells of the human brain, and acts in the world thanks to a hardware constituted by hundred billions of cells, by 2300 or 4600 double helix of DNA. Perhaps.

It seems that every brain cells has 10¹º atoms. Perhaps.

Almost seven billions of human being live in an universe born, it seems, from 13 to 20bilions of years ago, from a fire ball, at a temperature of 18 billions of millions, of millions, of millions degree, we live on a planet which seems to belong to a galaxy constituted by 5 billions of stars, inside a universe that it seems has been formed by 5 billions of galaxies. Perhaps.

To contribute with words and acts in such a contest would require first of all a sacred respect, dignified silence, apologetic awareness of our condition as human beings, sympathetic brotherhood and compassionate love for our alike.

Without mentioning science and religion common sense will be enough. Eurotas and Om, Association for Medicine and Transpersonal Psychology , are moving from these preliminary remarks to organize the 11th Eurotass conference entitled: Beyond the Mind (toward a consciousness of unity. From a culture of competition to a culture of sharing), to be held in Milan from the 15 to the 18 of October 2009.

Context

The ybrys (from the Greek term ybrys, insolence, abuse, violence) leads to a strain in the harmonic weft of society, and often forces us to build cathedral without basement, makes us hurry, and makes us omit to stay. If transpersonal view does have a sense, it will find it first of all in the art of sharing: sharing of Self, one’s own resources and creative power, and one’s own limits and shadows as well, with synergy and resonance rather than in competition for aims achievement.

Transpersonal view comes from ancient times but it does come with modern tools, it has the strength of thousand years of history and most of all three centuries of science. And it does know of not knowing.
As Ervin Laszlo remind us we live in the core of a transformation, the deepest and quickest one ever happened in human history, a transformation as radical as the one that led humanity from middle ages to modern era, but this actual one took place in a range of few decades instead of centuries.
Global communication through information technology had dramatic repercussions on environment, economy, politic, education and culture in general.
In a few decades there has been a transition from a world based on few questions with monolithic and positive answers to a world that has many different paths available to investigate the miracle of life, to give an answer to basic questions about us and about a better way to live.
In few decades the housefather, the priest of town, the wise man of the village, have seen their power drowned in the rushing stream of global communication brought by the troy horse of information technology or more easily by the bookstore at the shopping mall.
This change has brought about some people toward a technological run and an absolute faith in the scientific, materialistic and rational method. On the other hand other people castled themselves in orthodox faith, not only religious ones, leading to an increment in fundamentalist phenomenon especially in the poorest and the most threatened population on the planet. Between these two trends in these recent years has been developing a varied trans-cultural world with many facet some prone to esoteric or salvation drift, others venturing in sometime reckless sometime intrepid religious and cultural syncretism. Some people use the term New Age, other the term holism to define such a cultural phenomenon typical of the progressive societies in the third millennium.

Transpersonal ethic

The transpersonal movement differentiate completely from both rationalist dogmatism and religious fundamentalism and New Age simplicity. Transpersonal ethic is watering to a various springs of clear water. The first one is the source of awareness coming from the new paradigm of science and eco-fair culture, the consciousness of the delicate and absolute interdependence between our live and the life on the planet. This means a sacred respect and full responsibility for our actions and attitude, it means working for our own as well as our community wellness; where community includes not only the other human beings but also trees and animals, mountains and forests, waters and oceans, sacred because they are animated with the holy spirit of life and hence they deserve the place to grow and wholly expand their potential.

The second source is the transpersonal ethic, grounded on moral codes mainly coming from the different religions. The transpersonal movement is actively concerned with spiritual traditions and their ethical issues, moreover it has the instruments and knowledge to foster people’s adhesion to their own codes and traditions, as it does not purse any interest to substitute any beliefs or moral value, but rather it works in synergy to promote the dialogue between different traditions and to acknowledge complementarities and alikeness between them.

The third source is coming from the background related to the instruments and knowledge’s of healing processes, and to the mastery of inner experiences and state of consciousness. Just think about the inheritance coming from the psychological research conducted by James, Freud, Jung, Reich, Pearls, Assaggioli and others. Consider the different experiential therapies, group meetings, manpower development, the transpersonal models proposed by Grof, Neil, Tart, the so called technologies of the sacred, Wilber’s integral vision and Maslow’s hierarchy needs.

A responsibility emerges from this extensive set of cognisance and methods so that everyone is called to act supporting and encouraging sharing, assistance and mutual love for the entire living community.

Such a responsibility is not an invitation to elude discomfort and avoid bad attitudes, but rather a clear and unambiguous commitment to knowledge our self, even our shadows, honouring our true essence in every field, would it be psychological, educational, ecological or socio-political.

The event

Being aware that the answers may be found in the questions, intent of the 11th Eurotas Conference is to offer the opportunity to create a field were Logos may become Heart and yield Soul, and Soul may express itself in experiences and effective projects.

Each one of the first three days will be dedicated to a specific area: education, science and society. Round tables will be organized with experts, whose duty will be to gift their heart and share their wisdom before showing their knowledge.

During meetings and workshops delegates will work to assist participants encouraging insight, what Bohm calls a new order of knowledge, the true knowledge, coming from the silence of the mind.

In the fourth day, from all the different contribution we will work out a “manifesto transpersonal” which collect inside a single document the main themes of the transpersonal vision.

Events of spontaneous theatre, music, chorus, meditation will be held during the evenings and the intervals between the sessions.

The 11th EUROTAS Conference Organization is honoured to host two personalities, for whom no presentation is needed: Stanislav Grof and Ervin Laszlo, to them goes our warmest thanks for gifting us with their presence.

11. A New Newsletter from Serge Beddington Behrens

Dear Friend,

This is the first issue of a Newsletter which I plan to be sending out every two months or so. It takes the form of some thoughts around some of the challenges which we are all facing in the world today and suggests other perspectives on how we might view them and survive them. It particularly touches upon some new ways of relating to our current 'credit crunch' which I hope might be useful to some of you.

Exactly what precise form this newsletter will continue to take, I am not clear at this stage, but, in addition to a little piece by me on some relevant topic, I would certainly like it to evolve towards being a more formal kind of news bulletin, with interesting comments on items of general interest, by people whose opinions I value. Please, if you have any ideas or responses to this newsletter, do share them and I can include your replies in the next issue. And please, if you don't feel a resonance with the kinds of things I talk about here - my ideas are not everyone's cup of tea - please email me if you would lie a copy of the Newsletter : info@sergebb.com, I am most easily contactable on my mobile: 07968 113075.

I wish you a very happy Xmas and New Year.
Love Serge

Serge Beddington-Behrens

12. A Further Remembrance of Rumold

Pia gave this remembrance of Rumold with Kati playing the harp at the Barcelona Conference

EUROTAS ‘Soul of Europe’ meeting, Barcelona 31st of October 2008

‘Of Joy and Sorrow’

In dear remembrance of the late Rumold Mol

Pia Keiding (DK), Belgium
Katia Van Loo, Belgium (harp)

For those who do not know Rumold Mol, this conference probably wouldn’t have come into being if he hadn’t been.

To Rumold

- In the beginning was chaos. Then came Eurotas, in Greek mythology the father of Sparta. 1
- In the beginning was chaos. Water stagnating in the plain, and the father, Eurotas, carried the waters, stagnating, into the sea by means of a canal.
- In the beginning was chaos, and one of the fathers of EUROTAS came, named Rumold, and he carried water, and carried water and dug canals and made streams between East and West, North and South, and he dug and danced and laughed and worked with such enthusiasm that we know today, just like the real river Evrótas in Greece, which never dries out – even in the driest summer.
- Rumold brought together so many streams and springs that our EUROTAS grew more and more rich in water, rich in energy and diversity and has such a rich amount of science, wisdom, learning, exchange and love, that our EUROTAS thanks to Rumold will never dry out.
We miss Rumold and we are in sorrow, Ank and all of us in EUROTAS, so I asked the Prophet to speak about sorrow and he answered: 2
‘Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
And is not the lute – and this harp – that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight – and Rumold gave us such delight.
Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.’
Let’s be in that balance quietly together for Rumold for a moment. Thank you

1 In Greek mythology, Eurotas (Εúρώτας) was the father of Sparta. Eurotas has been said to have carried the waters, stagnating in the plain of the city of Sparta, into the sea by means of a canal. The river that originated from that was named Eurotas (modern name Evrótas) after him. The water of the river comes from several springs, which give the Evrotas such a rich amount of water that it never dries out, not even in the hot midsummer.
