2019, a special year for the Transpersonal Community

2019 is a special year for our community as we are in the process of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the creation of Transpersonal Psychology. 50 years in the field means that this is no longer a time of discovery with all the freshness that new birth brings – it is now a time of maturity! It may also be a time of integration, of new understanding and vision, but what I do know, is that Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy have been evolving over these 50 years.

The celebrations that will take place this April in California, offer us a full spectrum of these developments, as well as future perspectives. This is a time to honor the founders and all the contributors who have brought the results of their research, discoveries and practices to the field, and an opportunity to acknowledge where we are nowadays and what could or should be the next steps for Transpersonal Psychology.

In 2019, another exciting event will also take place, namely the 20th EUROTAS Conference near Paris. With the topic Being Human in a World in Transition we have the ambition to take part and contribute to the next steps of evolution for Transpersonal Psychology. In these chaotic times, I think Transpersonal Psychology has a role to play in the world. If we consider interconnectedness as a major contribution of the transpersonal cartography, then we have to open more to the collective, to step out of what some people call “the transpersonal ghetto” or “the transpersonal chapel” to speak to the “outer world” in convincing and relevant words. As we may experience it today, this may not be so easy and probably partially explains why it is so difficult for the transpersonal vision to be accepted and understood.

You’ll find more information about these 2 events in this newsletter.

The Transpersonal movement needs you to blossom and to bring some light to the world.

Bernadette Blin

EUROTAS president

Join us in the ATP conference celebrating 50 years of Transpersonal Psychology. In 1969, the first copy of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology was published. Now Transpersonal Psychology has grown throughout the world and has made multiple contributions. In California, USA, we will celebrate the contributions of 50 years of contributions and envision the next 50 years. This conference has seven keynote speakers: Roger Walsh, Jorge Ferrer, James Fadiman, Marilyn Schlitz, Rick Doblin, Mariana Caplan, and Harris Friedman. Plus, there will be over 100 presenters from 19 countries and 4 post-conference workshops. For more information go to: www.atpweb.org .

The words “being”, “human”, “world”, “transition” touch us in what and who we are –particularly in this time of transition that has become very real for the planet that hosts us; in today’s world, which is essentially constructed on patriarchal and economic values, and in the world of the future, which, we are told, will be a combination of catastrophic events and enhanced humans.

For the first time in the history of mankind, man represents the most serious danger to his own survival. He has become his own enemy, identified as he is with his ego, whose narrow vision does not include cooperation or respect for the planet. While some cannot live in dignity – or die of starvation and lack of care – others become neurotic and addicted. Our world is in total imbalance at many levels: global warming, overexploitation of natural resources, social injustice and the loss of biodiversity are all direct consequences of our civilization that are now threatening us. We are all in this adventure together and dependent on each other.

A wave of awareness is passing through our societies, but change occurs only slowly. Politicians and the majority of the population do not want to take serious action, seeming to believe that small adjustments will be enough to curb the situation, without losing too much of the comfort acquired in the industrial age. This great global and humanitarian crisis comes to question our rich countries about our ability to lose and let go of our comforts, goods and habits. It questions our position as human beings in relation to life, nature, others and thus our whole way of living our “humanness”.

  • Is human being, an individual or a collective experience?
  • How do we relate to nature, that we have greatly exploited and enslaved? Can we conceive of ourselves as independent of our nourishing “mother”?
  • What about the concept of “transhumanism”, what does it mean and why?
  • Is it not rather a question of finding our roots, our reason and our heart?
  • What balance and what human ecology is possible without respect for the collective whole and without recognition of our origins?
  • What does this turbulent phase teach us about the earth and about ourselves? How can we navigate through it?

Since its beginnings, the transpersonal movement has explored these questions through its global and spiritual vision of life and being. This approach is shared by various artistic, philosophical, spiritual and shamanic traditions and is receiving increased recognition from modern science

During these five days, you will be able to discover, question, meet, experiment, testify and imagine the future. This congress will thus play an active role in the inevitable transformation that is announced. Thus, we kindly invite you to participate in this practical sharing. While exchange is necessary and enlightening, now it is time for the transpersonal movement, EUROTAS and its partners, in consultation with citizens’ movements, to engage in concrete actions towards the transition to a world where all living beings will live in dignity – in a world where respect and love are key values.

One of the founding fathers of the transpersonal approach, Carl Gustav Jung, emphasized that our inner life carries meaning only if it is manifested in the social field through our actions and our involvement in the collective life. We can have a long-standing regular meditation practice, participate in endless trainings and personal development courses or follow a spiritual teacher and teaching, however if we do not return to the world with the lessons incarnation has taught us, if we do not share our talents with our fellow travelers and create a loving society, then we cannot claim to be engaged in a transpersonal life.

John Lennon once sang “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one”. EUROTAS 2019 offers you a way of experiencing this utopic vision by drawing inspiration from lectures and workshops as well as sharing your ideas and desires with other participants through the assistance of an experienced facilitator. At the end of the conference, there will be an opportunity to present the projects that have emerged and to invite others to join you!

What seems like nonsense to our more conservative colleagues is most likely basic common sense to us, as transpersonal thinkers and practitioners. Indeed, rather than focus on the surface manifestations, many of our approaches seek to help our clients identify and release the hold of our psychic wounds in their deepest and most subtle roots.

To use a simple and universally understood terminology, the hotbed of our unresolved issues lays in the subconscious – our memory of everything from our current lifetime – and the superconscious – our memories of all lifetimes. This deep-seated place in our consciousness is where we find such things as personal karma, family karma and ancestral karma.

While both we and our clients can experience spontaneous past-life recall simply through being in receptive or expanded states of consciousness focused on healing, these states can also be induced through hypnosis. Then, just as we would walk a client through a painful experience from their current lifetime, bringing attention to the stuck energy and using our skill set and intuitive guidance to help them liberate that energy, we can do the same while they are recalling past lives.

Breathwork was my first love and a most powerful tool for healing and transformation. But I got itchy feet and wanted to move my practice online and, online and breathwork don’t go together. Adopting a mindfulness-based approach of inner exploration in 2014, left me free to pursue my life as a digital nomad in India; in 2016, I attended my first professional training with Brian and Carole Weiss at Omega Institute in New York. The training was powerful and transformational. Past-life regression therapy has enhanced and revolutionized my way of working. The healing I see in my clients is deeply satisfying. I cover some theory and a case study of past-life regression therapy in my book: Psychology in the Light of the East (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017)

Breathing is a life-sustaining activity that we practice instinctively from the moment we are born until the moment we die.

Conscious Connected Breathwork is a somatic therapy. An hour-long session with the rhythm of the breath, used in this technique, influences neural activity, enhances memory recall and expands emotional awareness. It helps to release suppressed blockages from the automatic nervous system.

Since 1993, I have applied this breathing technique in the context of recovery and have found it to be very powerful in supporting and advancing the treatment of addiction and stress management (among other issues) since the body holds our traumas, it can also heal itself.

The release of physical tension is the first effect and reframing past and negative experiences the second, completed by integration of the self. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or as an add-on to medical treatments. Conscious Connected Breathwork can also create access to an altered state of consciousness often leading to the experience of bliss and transcendence.

Dear friends and colleagues,

Here is an update and some invitations of the EURTOAS Youth Council – a work-in-process format to support the upcoming generation of transpersonal thinkers and practitioners:

1) You are warmly invited to digitally join the presentation at the Top Transpersonal Gathering 2019 at Mandali Retreat Center, entitled “Information and Communications Technology for a Worldwide Transpersonal Community.” It will be held on Wednesday, March 13th from 15:30-16:00 CET (see here for an abstract: https://feedingthesoul.net/dennis-johnson/).

The main intention here is to create a real live experience of a 21st century and globally connected transpersonal movement through the power of modern communication technology – for this your help and participation is requested. You will be able to join the presentation live through a Zoom Online Meeting (https://zoom.us/) and in this way partake in the talking stick circle and meet the physical audience.

Please contact me at youthcouncil@eurotas.org and/or dennisaxeljohnson@gmail.com if you wish to participate.

2) The Youth Council hosts regular online meetings for networking, support and connection. The upcoming dates are March 20, April 10, May 8 and June 12 (19:30-21:00). Simply follow this link to join: https://zoom.us/j/3161059551. You are also invited to join the Facebook Group of the Youth Council: https://www.facebook.com/groups/610658609106624/

3) The Youth Council will play a central role in the course of events of this year’s EUROTAS conference in France (Paris, September 25-29, https://www.eurotas2019.com/en). We are looking for dedicated people to collaborate amongst each other and the organizers on site during the conference – if this is you, please do get in touch!

Conscious Connected Breathing can entice us to voyage far into the realm of being, often beyond words. The pure heart of the universe is beating in harmony with the voice of the soul, dancing and flowing with the self, while listening to the song of the spirit. Powerful recognition that life itself is a gift of different sounds and rhythms, some of them so simply sweet, others more complicated to accept. If we keep breathing, thinking and acting in this conscious connected way, we reach the most precious gift of all, the acceptance of what is.

My, oh my! That first CCB session was so powerful, an hour or so of steady breathing, with an energy in my lungs that I didn’t know I had.

Breath freedom and the power of the self are key breathing parameters, thus I value minimizing the breath worker’s interference in the breather’s experience. Breathers then encounter their own power and learn to transform dysfunctional breathing habits by themselves.

‘The important problems that we face cannot be resolved on the same level that we create them.’ Albert Einstein’

Among many breathing techniques, Conscious Connected Breathwork is the one I love, for it healed me. In my trainings, the trained breath worker’s intuitive interventions are tailor made for the breather in each session and have energy of focused guidance, rather than duplicated systemic actions.

Ten sessions with a professional breathworker and this technique will have built up wonderful freedom for the client, who can then take their accumulated knowledge home and practice independently. Live experience trains them into an awareness of their own breathing which enables them to self-direct.

Satisfaction in life reaches its maximum expression when thought and action both dance to the Rhythm of the Breath.

As spring approaches and we all look at the progress made over the last years in the field of Transpersonal Psychology, we are given the opportunity to reflect as well, on our personal being and how we have evolved through a transpersonal perspective. Very often we are so caught up with the planning of events and work, that we have little time if any to practice reflexivity. However, it is as important if not more important to focus on one’s own personal, professional and transpersonal development as well, and to reflect on how one has evolved as part of the Transpersonal field. This I believe calls for a deeper element of inquiry that can only add to the achievements made by the field of Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Accordingly therefore, I extend an invitation to all readers to make that extra effort to observe their own particular progress over the years, and to perhaps even share some of their greater learning lessons, that have come through their experience. Don’t forget to consider how attending the many transpersonal conferences and workshops have influenced your personal path of self-discovery, and how you have taken this back into the world.

As Mezirow (1991) points out, we learn by refining or elaborating our meaning schemes, learning new meaning schemes, transforming meaning schemes, and transforming meaning perspectives.

Let this spring and the 50 year anniversary of Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy, also be an anniversary of reflexivity as you ponder on how the transpersonal movement has contributed to changing your life.
